I'm trying to find how and when my ancestors John Kelly and wife Hannah Broughton got here supposedly from Liverpool, England. He was born in Ireland before 1755 and she was born about the same time, but in England. I found a marriage record stating they were married in Liverpool September 19, 1785. Then there is a census showing John was enumerated in New Cornwall, Orange County, New York in 1790 with one male of age sixteen and over (b. before 1774), three males under age sixteen (b. 1775-90), and four females. There is a 5 year time span between the marriage date 1785 in Liverpool and the 1790 census here in the US when I figure they must have migrated here, but I cannot find any record of how they got here. I am fairly new to this so I'm in the dark. I subscribed to Ancestry to see if I could find any record there, but failed to find any sign of how they got from England to the US. John was listed as a Labourer in the marriage info, so I'm supposing they both lived there in Liverpool and migrated from there. I have no info on where John lived in Ireland. Can someone steer me in the right direction? Thank you for whatever help you can give!

Early ship manifests didn't include much detail. Many families may have entered the USA through Canada since fares from England to Canada were often less expensive than those to the USA. Unfortunately, Canada only instituted a process to preserve manifests in the 19th century.

I'm not suggesting you give up, just advising you that there may be no entry record for your ancestors.

Best of luck with the search.

Thank you for the help. I'm so inexperienced that I can waste a lot of time looking where it's fruitless to look. I appreciate the help.

What religion was that branch of your family? You might find church baptismal records in early New York State. There will not be birth records that early in NY.

There is an Atlantic States Research group you might join for more help.

    Best of luck.
