I am doing the California Naturalization Records 1903-1991. Often there are 2 images to a batch. The second image is the Oath of Allegiance with the signature of the applicant. The applicant's name was already recorded from the first image. So it appears there are no fields to transcribe from the second image. Should I mark the second image as "No Extractable Data", submit the batch then when asked select the "Delete the Entries for Image"?

Sorry, I have read the project instructions and viewed the Ask a Question to the Community but could not find the answer.

You will only index the name and the record date on an Oath. There is an example of how to index them under Project Instructions/What To Index/How to Index An Oath Of Allegiance.

The second entry may have already been there, in case 2 documents including information on 2 different people were included in the same image. Across the top of the screen, there's a ribbon of tools including one that will add or delete entries.

A Oath of Allegiance it its own separate document and is indexed as such. In the Project Instructions under What To Index:

Index only the following types of documents: Declarations of intention, petitions for naturalization, military petitions, oaths of allegiance, naturalization certificates, final orders, alien registrations, repatriation records, certificates of admission, name change records, and naturalization cards. In addition, index documents that are similar to these form-types.

There is an example of how to index them under Project Instructions/How to Index An Oath Of Allegiance.

I have a similar problem, but the left side of image is a certificate of arrival which should not be indexed and the right side of image is a Petition for Naturalization which should be indexed. What should I do. The shared batch number is MQFW-XVR].

You will only index the Petition on Image 1 and only the Oath of Allegiance on Image 2.

I have the same question. The Petition for Naturalization is image 1, and the Oath of Allegiance is image 2. I'm not sure if I should type everything in that was included on image 1 in the entry for image 2 as well, or if I'm meant to leave most fields marked blank on image 2.

Thank you erutherford for your reply, I was assuming the second image was part of the same document since the batch only had the two images, but it is treated as separate one as you said.

One more question why does it indicate "1 of 2 entries"? I really just have 1 entry per image. They only way I can move on is to mark each field for the non existent 2nd entry as "blank". Perhaps I have set something to default to 2 entries mistakenly?

Thank You Nya Belle Andersen, I can't get it to default to 1 entry per image but I can go to the 2nd entry then just delete the entry (garbage can in tool bar) and it lets me move on.

On another note, I have been trying to find out how to reorder the input fields to matches the progression through the document but cannot see how to do that. It seems like I read somewhere where you could do that.

Here's how you delete all blank entries.

Step one is to click the trash can. This dialog box appears. Instead of selecting "The current entry (Entry X)", you will choose "All blank entries." This will delete all of the blank entries in your batch. Click Delete. You will now have one entry per image. If you do <BLANK> throughout the entry and submit the batch with the blank image, it will just be deleted by the reviewer. When this dialog appears, Choose "All blank entries" and click Delete. This will delete all of the empty entries in the batch, leaving you with one entry per image.

As for moving the fields, hover over the name of the field. A four point arrow will appear. Click and hold that. A blue outline will appear around the field. Click and drag the selected field to where you want it and release your mouse.

@LeonEddy, the default number of entries per image is set by the project. They usually err on the side of more rather than less, because better blank entries than missing entries (if an indexer didn't know how to add more). If your batch has fewer entries, use the trashcan to delete the extra(s).

Reordering the fields is drag-and-drop. Put your cursor above the box so it turns into a four-headed arrow, then click and hold while moving until the "ghost" is where you want that box to be, then let go.

Regarding the two images in each batch, and whether they "go together" or not: naturalizations have a variable number of pages per person. When the batches are generated, nobody looks at whether they're for the same person or for two different people. You just get the next two consecutive images. And, depending on what's on the pages you get, they may count as separate entries even if they're for the same person. This is why in these projects you have to pay extra-close attention in Step One.

When you index the Oath, you will index the following, indexing the rest of the fields as <BLANK>.

    Given Name: William

    Surname: Petersen

    Record Moth: Jan

    Record Day: 2

    Record Year: 1924

Keep in mind that there is an example of how to index an Oath under Project Instructions/What To Index/How to Index An Oath of Allegiance.
