Importing a GEDCOM
What are the risks of importing a GEDCOM from a tree built in Ancestry?
I know it won't bring in all the references, but I am more concerned about duplicates and other problems that will need to be corrected. Does it cause a lot of work?
What other work needs to be done when brining in a GEDCOM?

@Larry Fischer if you have a Latter-day Saints access to Ancestry you can compare individuals from your Ancestry trees to their FamilySearch profiles through that link. There is more information on how to do that in the Ancestry Support page: Church of Jesus Christ-Ancestry® Membership.
That way you would be able to add only the pieces of information or individuals that are not already in FamilySearch Family Tree.

Actually, you can compare individuals in a GEDCOM to individuals already in the tree even without an LDS account. When you upload your GEDCOM file, you then click "Compare" and the system automatically compares the two trees. Individuals whose info matches are listed as "already in tree", those who have some but not all matching info are listed as "potential matches" that you can confirm or reject, and those who are not found in the tree are listed as "Add to Family Search". The system is NOT perfect, but it does at least work as a starting point.

@SarahWanger unfortunately, however, the compare process when uploading to the FSFT is badly flawed. It's really NOT recommended.

@SarahWanger, I agree with Áine: the system does not, in fact, "work as a starting point". It fails to find too many existing profiles that match your file perfectly, and it can also suggest so many false matches that it practically forces people to dismiss them without looking. It also fails to show profiles properly -- no notes, no sources, often no relationships. The process is also completely missing any sort of "update" or "compare again" function, meaning that if adding a relationship made the hinting system find a branch, it'll still be in your file as "add to tree".
Do everyone -- including yourself -- a favor: don't use the GEDCOM compare-and-add function. In the long run, it'll be faster and easier to do it "longhand".
