Unreadable pages
I started indexing the City Directories and after several batches I am getting batches that are unreadable. I have tried changing the contrast and have played with the magnification, but I cannot get it focused enough to read and index them properly. I returned the batches; they all were from a Pittsburgh City Directory. Any tips or tricks to get the batches to come into focus enough to index?

My advice is to return them. The last city directories project, back in 2020/21, was huge. You can keep trying, or move onto another project for a while. The directory project will still be around if you do other projects for a day or two.
There was a key (I think that's what he called it) for Windows machines but this was a few years ago and I'm not sure the person that came up with it still posts.

Question on the same thing. The scan is of 2 pages. One page is readable and the other isn't. I have been returning them without marking them as unreadable because some of the info IS readable. I am doing reviews now and someone returned it with "No, No extractable data." Wondering what I should do since there is extractable data but not able to read it all. Do I put entries for all the unreadable lines (I can tell there is a new name but can't tell what it is-it's pretty much going to be about 100 unreadable entries) and then create entries for all the entries I can read (again, about 100)

Maybe someone at Family Search looks at the "no extractable data" ones and will do that one? I just hate for some names to be missed when some are readable.

Return them and do not mark them NNED.

Too bad the persons who scanned the city directories didn't look at the test results of their pictures before submitting them -- some are stark white --- some of them look like they overexposed them 1000% ---- sad.

I have run into a city directory that has the first page unreadable and the second page has already been indexed..... so now I don't know what to do but to return it. Afraid that the next person that tries to do a city directory will get the same batch....
