I have a mother (Fredericka) who was married twice. She was married to Henry first and had 4 Children with her first marriage. Sometime later after she had remarried to Walter, the children show up on a census with her and her new (2nd) husband, Walter. They are his step children. I can establish and record the correct relationships so that is not a problem.

What I want to know is how the detail page should look and how the children's PIDs work.

Is there only 1 PID per child regardless of how many marriages their parents might have had?

How do the children get attached in FS? Do they show up as children under both relationships or just under their biological parents?

My issue is that the 4 children show up correctly on the detail page of the parents as their children. But, I'm not sure what to do with the census record where the 2nd husband shows up? How is it attached?

This is how a child appears on the Details page if added to two sets of parents. In this example, Thomas was the biological son of Mary Alderson and "Francis", but the stepson of John Fawcett (who Margaret married when Thomas was about 2 years old). So, yes, there is only one ID per individual. When it comes to census records, you just attach them to each of the individuals named in the document.

Incidentally, Thomas used two surnames interchangeably throughout his life. In certain circumstances, I would have inputted his name as "Thomas Fawcett" (e.g., if he had used his stepfather's name exclusively throughout his life), but - in this case - I thought it more appropriate to show that as his "Alternate Name", in the "Other Information" section.

Sorry I could not find a better example - say with multiple stepchildren. I found one example where one child took on his stepfather's name throughout his life, but a sibling always went by the name of his mother! (Both being born illegitimately to her.)

Here's a slightly better example, the screenshot being that of the mother's page in this case:

As you can see, I have not been able to identify the father(s) of Janet Rae's first three children, so they appear under just her name. (Rae / Reay are the Scottish / English spellings of the same surname.) In the case of Nathaniel (Hetherington), even though he was born about six years before their marriage, I believe he was the biological son of both James Hetherington (father named Nathaniel) and Janet Rae, as the couple were living together well before their marriage. So, I have not marked him as a stepchild / illegitiamate and he is therefore placed just once on his mother's Details page, unlike his (half) siblings.

By the way, I am assuming you are aware of the procedure for indicating an individual's relationship to their parent(s). Firstly, click on the Edit / pencil symbol (see first screenshot). This takes you to the page (second screenshot) where you can "Add Relationship Type" (second screenshot), picking the appropriate one from the "next" page (third screenshot):
