Private information of living people entered in by now deceased parents
My father has been diligently entering in the names and details of living relatives into Family Search. Over the years he has made a lot of connections with distant relatives that we, his children, do not yet know. Having added the details of these persons into Family Search we understand that only he can see their information - as they are private, being living people.
It will be a shame to lose all those connections when he dies. Now I appreciate that each one of his children could use his login detail and manually copy across - one by one - every single living person that he has added. Not only will this be time consuming for all the children involved but we also we risk missing some of the persons.
The other alternative is to allow his private information created for living persons to be visible to nominated individuals, or even to transfer ownership of the private information to a nominated person. I notice there is a similar newly developed function within the Church Account settings to make Gospel Library notes available to others (upon request) after you die. Hopefully a similar function can be developed for FamilySearch.

There is a Family Groups feature currently under development that will allow sharing of such data within a selected group of users.

I believe this "problem" can be solved by using "third party" programs such as RootsMagic or Ancestral Quest. Since your father is still living and has a FamilySearch account, I would recommend "importing" the data from the Family Tree into either of these programs as soon as possible. That way you have the data stored for future generations. Also, be aware that when a person passes on the FamilySearch Account is "locked" so at that point in time you will not be able to access any of the living individuals that he has contributed to the Tree. Depending on how many names he has entered, you may already be aware that you can view a list of the records from the "My Contributions" menu, "Private People". FamilySearch has "promised" a Family Group feature for several years but it still is not yet available. So not knowing what that feature will eventually look like, I would not wait and count on that as a viable solution in the near term for you. It would be nice to hear from FamilySearch on their plans to solve this problem because I know that you are not alone with this situation.

The programs that can currently be used with FamilySearch to download from the website to the home computer system are listed in the Family Tree Management section of the Solutions Gallery.

Hi. It would appear from searching Ancestry help that what you want to do is available in a couple of different ways. Ancestry should be synched with Family Search for this to work. In Ancestry: 1. Search for "Requesting access to the account of an Ancestry member who passed away". This will get you the latest data the person entered into their tree. Have you dad put in his will that you have permission to access his Ancestry account and have access to his e-mail account. OR 2. Search for "Transferring ownership of an Ancestry Family Tree. Though transfer is not possible right now, there are 2 ways of getting information, however it may not be the latest information because it requires constant update with downloading the latest information in GEDCOM files. The article does not say what happens to Sharing a tree when the owner passes away. It appears that the tree stays with the original owner. Hope this helps. Opened my eyes. Family search should do the same. It would seem to me that if you have legal permission to access the Family search file of you dad (written in the will) that you could access the data, download it & upload to yours. I am going to ask the question.

Hello, please understand why we can't see the information of our living relatives is for thier own protection, prevent from identical thief, so why family search protect the information. The best way to prevent lossing the information that your dad and other relative while they are still living is to import or copy the information and enter to your own family search account and share also to your children and relative so that when the time come they can not also encounter same problem. Hope you understand. I believe that you need other way recover the information of your dad made. I can share a tips as long as your father , is living visit your father.
