Where can I find the NARA roll number for a census record or image? The NARA publication number is displayed with the record. The NARA roll number used to be available in the Information tab when viewing the image. With the recent UI changes, I can no longer find the roll number.

On the page with the new viewer-editor, delete the question mark and everything after it from the URL. This will take you back to the old viewer, where the NARA number is on the Information tab at the bottom.

Unfortunately, the new viewer-editor uses the Images section's cataloging information, which in my experience is nonfunctional.

That helped, in that I got a longer citation, but unfortunately it's still not showing the roll number. :-(

    Old citation:

"United States Census, 1940," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQH2-9FZ : 7 January 2021), Raymond Foley, Millcreek Township, Erie, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 25-37, sheet 23B, line 58, family 490, Sixteenth Census of the United States, 1940, NARA digital publication T627. Records of the Bureau of the Census, 1790 - 2007, RG 29. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, roll 3501.

Current citation using the trick above for the same sheet:

"United States Census, 1940," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9MT-P926?cc=2000219&wc=QZX5-8HP%3A790227701%2C801047501%2C802183701%2C953446801 : accessed 27 January 2024), Pennsylvania > Erie > Millcreek Township > 25-37 Millcreek Township outside Erie City S of State Highway 5 and State Highway 399 and N of South Ridge Rd, Eaglehurst-Glenruadh-Lakewood (part), Highland Park-Charter Oaks-Westminster (part) > image 46 of 70; citing Sixteenth Census of the United States, 1940, NARA digital publication T627. Records of the Bureau of the Census, 1790 - 2007, RG 29. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2012.

I'll have to see if the Ancestry work-around works, if FS won't give us the info anymore :-(.

"NARA digital publication T627." I believe that's the closest you get to a roll number for the 1940 census, but I may be wrong. (My immigrant ancestors were my parents, in 1957 and 1967.)

@Theresa Wolf When you are in the new viewer, choose the Group Data. You can leave feedback using the tab on the left. You could request they add the NARA roll info, maybe in the in the Archival Reference Number spot. You can leave your email with your feedback and request to be contacted by the team. There are no guarantees that they will be able to add it or get back to you, but I figure it usually doesn't hurt to ask.
