Quirk when adding a location

When adding an event location, the system is behaving in a silly way. See the attached screenshot and try adding a location in England. Most of the examples I have seen are locations in England.

We can still enter the place properly, there is just something wrong with the appearance as the place is being typed in.

    Not just England.

I assume that the quirk we are referring to, is that at the point when typing "Bolton, Lanc" in the entry box, then the suggested values in the dropdown list have the matching "Bolton, Lanc" in a different colour, followed by "ashire, England" (or whatever) in black with a new line in between.

(Sorry if you think I'm being pedantic but I prefer to be clear and the image is only appearing as a link for me)

    The simple response is... Why?

The behaviour does not appear to be helpful in the slightest - indeed splitting the suggested values with a new line in the middle of a word, is positively disruptive as I'm seeing the split rather than the text on either side of the split.

At first, I wondered if the different colour was intended to highlight the text in the suggestions that matches the (so far) typed entry. But this doesn't (at the moment) appear to be the case:

Type "st. mary's church, nan" as the entry and the suggested places have "St. Mary's Church, Nan" highlighted in colour, with "twich, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom" (or similar) in black and on a separate line. So the matching text is highlighted.

However, type "st. mary's, nan" as the entry (i.e. omit the "church") and the suggestions start with "St. Mary's Church, Nantwich, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom" (or similar) all in black and all on one line. So the matching bit is not highlighted.

So, for me, the behaviour serves no useful purpose, and it is, in fact, disruptive.

What usability analysis was done on this proposal? Why was it thought sensible to expend time and effort on this, rather than, oh, fixing search images, for instance?

I wondered if it might be a glitch that crept in with the recent change to fonts.

@Áine Ní Donnghaile - you did just make me double-check where I see the fault. It's on my Android phone (using Firefox as the browser), on my Windows 10 PC Firefox browser and on Win10 Chrome browser - though in that last case, it's looking at the Beta site, not production, as it's too much like hard work unravelling the cookies if I use Chrome on both the production site and the Beta site (its normal purpose for me).

So that's 3 quite different platforms.

Yes, it could indeed be a glitch - an inability to change colour without causing a new line maybe??? But seeing it on 3 different platforms (especially given that it's on both Firefox and Chrome) suggests something widespread that surely couldn't be missed, and therefore is intentional. Maybe?

(I'm just waiting for someone to say it's fine on Apple!)

I guess we wait to see if there's any response after the holiday...

Well, that is a new one. I have reported this, but I do not know how long it will take to be addressed with the holidays.

Here's an example from this morning - adding an Irish baptism/christening from Queen's (now Laois) County - the placename divides/wraps in the middle of the county name.

This problem was fixed. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
