Read-only access
What do I want: I want to be able to give family and maybe close friends a signon for my account that protects the definitions while making the information available.
I may not want to allow them to add/update anything, just read.
Why I want this: I don't want all my work to go to waste, whenever I die. Some will be interested now; others who don't have time for it now might become interested in the future.

Do you mean for living people you have entered? This would be through the new Family Groups feature that we've been told is under development.
If you mean for deceased people, do keep in mind that Family Tree is one, common, universal tree that is fully open edit for all users. For any person in your family lines that you have marked as deceased, any user with interest in the person, whether related or not, has full editing rights. Your family members and close friends don't need to be treated any differently than any other user and just need a regular FamilySearch account.

And, if you want to have a tree to which you can invite your family to view only, there are several platforms where you can do that. Many are also free.

Gordon, I was thinking of living people I have entered. My motivation for starting my family tree was identifying and finding living members of my family. The family groups feature sounds like maybe what I an looking for. I will try to learn more about that.
´Åine, can you mention some examples of the platforms you have in mind.
Thanks.

Ancestry, MyHeritage, and FindMyPast all have free tree options. There are many others.
