Why can I only add one marriage date

Hi Jennifer Welcome to FamilySearch Community and asking your question about adding additional marriages. You go to the person page, details tab, scroll down to the Family Members section. Look below the first marriage and if you go down far enough you will see a prompt to add spouse. This prompt will be below any children of the marriage. For each marriage you can enter the date and place of the marriage. You can also enter a date and place for a divorce. See this link.

Unfortunately, what that article appears not to make clear is that is you enter multiple marriage events it is the earliest dated one that will appear on the Details pages of the individual(s) concerned. This means, if you want a specific, later marriage to be displayed on their pages, you cannot enter multiple marriages to (or you have to delete them from) the Couple Relationship section.
As an example, John Smith and Mary Brown marry in 1920, they subsequently divorce, then remarry in 1940. If you want the 1940 date to be the one displayed on their Details page(s) you will have to remove the 1920 event and add those details as a Custom Event or as part of a comment in the Collaboration section.
There have been longstanding requests for this design to be changed, in order that users can choose a preferred event for display, whilst retaining other event dates in the Couple Relationship area, but Family Tree developers have decided not to make this a priority.
To clarify, the problem does not arise if a person marries different individuals - only if there are multiple events relating to the same couple (even, say, a civil and church ceremony conducted at the same period).

Thanx Paul, yes it is a bit frustrating that the marriage I want to show which is the one that I am part of the tree is not displayed, also how does one remove a dupicate child I tried to do this and it deleted the parents even though I clicked child?

If you were sure they really did represent the same child it would have been better to merge the two IDs, rather than remove one. The usual procedure is to use the profile with the more detailed data / sources attached, then using "Tools" go to Merge By ID and type in the ID that appears the better one to delete. During the merge, bring across or replace any more accurate / detailed information the appears against the profile that is to be merged into the surviving one.
What you appear to have done is to have removed a duplicate child from a relationship with these (or any) parents, whereby it is now alone on the tree, possibly with useful data still attached. If I am correct in understanding what you have done, I would advise retrieving the ID you have separated (you should be able to find it under "Recents" (or My Contributions / My Changes) and carry out the merge with the child you wish to remain attached to the parents.
Any problems, please return here where I, or a more experienced user, should be able to provide further advice.
