town names are mis-spelled, non existant

What is the proper thing to do when indexing:

town names are out of date, or misspeled. Do we install the name that is new for locations

that have been changed because of War and Nation disputes.

Some town names are typed wrong, and are no longer towns, and some statements are just area's, not towns.

not necessarily towns.

Is it ok to install new names to replace misspelled, and out-of-date town names.?

If they are misspelled, and you know the correct spelling, use the correct spelling. This is covered in the Field Helps (purple question marks).

For names, it's what it is at the time. If a place name has changed from 1920 to 2023, you will index the 1920 version. Constantinople is now Istanbul, but you will still index it as Constantinople. Places like Austria-Poland, Poland-Russia and Province of Quebec no longer exist, but they existed at the time and should be indexed as such.

For areas: if it says near Chicago or near London or near Minsk, you will only index the city.
