Discovering a Relationship

I have seen where I can see how I am related to famous people. How can I see how I'm related to someone else in the larger family tree? My brother in law's family comes from the same small area in Holland as my father's family and there are some common last names. I'd like to see if, and how, there are family ties.

In the world tree, you can click on any user's profile and look at how you are related, as long as that user has the relationship function enabled. FamilySearch allows people to enable or disable the relationship function. It may be you have to "find" each other first. A woman who helped me in a family history center became curious if the two of us were related and because she was on the computer while I was watching her do something, I guided her to a person page where I have been a contributor. When there, she clicked on my name and we saw we may, indeed, be distantly related.

The third-party site RelativeFinder (https://www.relativefinder.org/#/start) offers these functions using FamilySearch's Family Tree data. (It is rather "narrow-minded", though: it basically doesn't consider relatives by marriage to be relatives.)
