About half of the records show two different stamped numbers next to the record number area of the document. Which number do I use as the record number? The positions wander around often with one number above the area and the other below.

You are missing the last 2 letters or numbers of your batch code. It should be like [xxxx-xxx].

Without seeing what the document is (I think this is a DEC), there are a few ways to determine the record number.

The first one is to use the number that is closest to the line. This works most of the time. The other way is to check the next document. You can use the +1 reference image since the order of documents are DEC, PET and OOA. PET's generally begin with the number 4. With that being said, and without seeing what document it is, I'll use the second option on this and say the record number is 275008.

Thanks for the information about the reference number to look at the documents before and after. I didn't remember that help existed.
