Record Hints Further Up (or Down) the Line
I have been trying to resolve any hints that I can in my family tree.
I have found it frustrating that the limit on the fan chart view is seven generations, because I cannot easily see if there are research hints beyond that point. Navigating beyond that point can be difficult and makes it hard to find my way back. (I use the fan chart view, which makes it significantly easier to see if there are any hints)
It would be helpful if an icon (or a colored circle or something) would appear just beyond the edges of the fan chart/by the arrow (for descendancy or portrait/landscape views) to indicate that there is a hint in that direction.
This could also apply to some other things, such as birthplaces that are not currently on the fan chart in fan chart's birthplace view setting, or particularly large/small numbers of stories/sources/photos on the stories/sources/photos view settings, etc. (I mostly only use the fan chart view, so I don't know if those have an equivalent in the other views.)
This could also apply to other things, such as how much farther that line goes.
Any of these would make navigation significantly easier.
This could also apply to my idea for community added flags or research helps. Here is a link to that idea:
This idea functions similarly to my other idea:
(I couldn't find the link... it regarded a similar icon that indicated the closest direct line ancestors in each line so you can more easily navigate to your own tree.)

The fan chart view only shows you 7 generations at a time, but it's pretty easy to see more than that. The fan chart view has a handy feature for showing the fan chart of anyone on the fan chart. Just hover your mouse over the innermost arc of any person's block. You'll see a fan chart icon appear; click on that icon and you'll see a new fan chart with that person as the new focus person. Using your browser's back button from that point will return you to the previous chart. One click to drill down and one back button to return is pretty easy, once you get the hang of it.
Armed with this knowledge, you can start with your own fan chart, and then systematically work through each of your 8 great-grandparents. You will thus be looking at 10 generations of your ancestors. Or you can work through each of your 16 great-great-grandparents to review 11 generations. Or if you want to max out this approach, you can work through each of your 64 g-g-g-g-grandparents to review 13 generations. And of course you can apply this technique to anyone in the second-level chart to review up to 19 generations.

I have been working in Family Tree for over eleven years and have never used the fan chart view!
To me, the easiest way to view relatives with record hints is from the landscape view. There is still a restriction of the number of generations that can be viewed, of course - again, about 7 generations on my 21" monitor - 10 if you can still view comfortably with the reduced magnification required - but I generally find Landscape to be the best way to gain a good view of multiple generation of my family branches.
But, maybe I should start using this view - in spite of the limited generations that can be displayed at one time, I agree the availability of record hints is highlighted far better than in using Landscape!

Hi! I'm only seeing four generations on my fan chart. How can I expand that to seven generations?
Thank you!
