How do you index a suffix on a name?

Example: Joseph Smith, Jr.

When reviewing the index it was listed as: " Joseph , Jr ." under given names. And "Smith" for the surname.

Is this the correct way to index a suffix if it isn't identified? Do I just leave it out since there isn't a spot for this information?

Unless there is a field specifically for a suffix, you will not index the suffix. "Joseph Smith, Jr." will be indexed as "Joseph Smith." I can literally count on one hand how many projects I've seen that had a suffix field and the last time was 3+ years ago.
