How To Fix an Indexing Error
Hello,
There is an error on the record of one of our ancestors in this record:
New Jersey Births and Christenings, 1660-1980
There is no editing option on this record. How can I get it corrected?
The index incorrectly lists the record as belonging to our ancestor's brother, who was not even been born at the time. I think I understand why the mistake was made as there was an error written on the actual church birth record years later. (Someone recorded a marriage to the wife of the incorrectly listed brother on the page.)
Thanks in advance.

Not all records have the option of editing them, though I think I've heard that they are gradually making older ones available to edit.

The New Jersey Births and Christenings images are not available to view from home for non-LDS church members. For that reason it cannot be edited - no image to compare to.

Thank you for the response. I had the town's special collections librarian look for me and she pulled the image which confirmed what I had suspected. I was hoping to find a contact with FamilySearch would could review the record and note that it needs a correction.

The index is not the record and it served its purpose since you found the record. I'm at my FSC this afternoon if you would like me to pull a copy.

Thank you for your very generous offer. I do have a copy that the librarian pulled, so I think I am set with that. It's just that it's a bit hard to see so I was hoping to get the clear printed index to use for a delayed birth certificate request. I'll use what I have.
And yes, it did serve the purpose, but only because I knew from research that the person it was indexed to had not been born yet. If anyone else is looking for it, it will be hard to find without that knowledge.
Thanks again for the offer and the guidance. Best wishes!

Often, the image on FamilySearch is better than the image from the NJ Archives. I have many in my files that I purchased from NJ before they were available from FS.
