I am seeking documentation for my maternal grandfather's birth

Claude Melvin Frank Short (deceased) claimed to have been born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 01 Jan 1899, emigrating to New Zealand prior to the earliest documents I have found for him, being his 1917 WWI Army Reserve Roll and 1923 marriage in New Zealand. If anyone can assist me in this quest, I will be deeply appreciative.
