Hiya.

I'm indexing a Petition for Naturalization, and I came across a name I'm unsure how to index. It is highly legible, but the formality indexing the full surname for "Luisa De Martino," alludes me. There's a contextual clue found from the fact that she was "formerly known as Luisa Ferrainolo,” meaning her surname was certainly changed. But is her full surname "De Martino?' Or just "Martino?" And if the latter be the case, would "De" constitute as a part of the Given name?

If you could assist, thank would be a blessing,

Thank You.

De Martino is an Italian surname. You will index the surname as Ferrainolo De Martino.

Yup, as erutherford says, De Martino is a surname that starts with D, just as Van Gogh is a surname that starts with V.

(Practices differ between countries about how such names are alphabetized, but luckily, that doesn't matter for computerized indexing and searching.)
