Hello, I have come across this several times, today September 4, 2023 in searching through Rahoon Parish records. I've gone through from 1823 to now, 1836, and this is the first time in this long search that I've noticed this. At first it looked like Fev and the 2nd and 3rd look like F.N. and I see it on boy and girl names, so it is a two word abbreviation, and what seems significant is that there is only one sponsor, being Godmother (at least so far).

    Example #3:

    13 Thos Bodkins F.N.

Wm and Mary Tierney Sally Brennan Aiskeboy

    ( Date: 13 Aug 1836

    Baptized: Thomas Bodkins F.N.

Parents: William Bodkins and Mary Tierney

    Sponsor: Sally Brennan

Residence: Aiskeboy [ a townland west/northwest of and part of Galway City]

I don't have an answer for F.N., and of the thousands of names I've looked at this week, there is no fil or fila so it isn't a reference to son or daughter.

My guess might be something to do with the child dying at birth. I'm not much help, but would like to strike up this conversation further as it is still a mystery, thanks Steve
