Split scanned records
I am currently scanning "South Africa—Dutch Reformed Church Registers, 1660–1970 [Part F]". Unfortunately, the complete record is scanned as two separate images. The one image is the current image and the next image is a reference image. Without the reference image, the event for the date shown cannot be determined without the reference image. (Please see the images above/below). Since the reference image +1 shows a birth date the date in the current image must be the christening (baptism) date. I can see the two are linked but matching may not always be possible. From the instructions, I must reject the image +1 if I ever receive it as a current image for indexing because a date linked with the names of witnesses is meaningless. This is such a pity because it means that vital information will be lost. As a South African of Dutch descent, I am pained by this loss of data, not only for the Dutch Reformed Church and its members but for myself and other South African Members doing research. Are you able to offer some information to calm my troubled heart?

- In regards to the images that are on a different image the Project Instructions on about line 14 states: Some records may continue to or from another image and you may need to view another image to get information for the fields on the image you are indexing.
- Also in the General Indexing guidelines the article What to Do When Records Span 2 Images or to View Additional Images it states: If the first record on an image begins on a previous image, don't index it. The record will be indexed as part of the previous batch. Start indexing at the first complete record.
- If the last record on an image continues to the next image, index the entire record, including what continues to the next image.
- In other words - you can use the next image to complete the record for the image in your batch - Only if it is the first page of the document. If it is the last page of the document mark it No Extractable data and the person who picks up that batch will complete it. I hope this makes sense?
