new household flag
Does anyone know the answer to the Alaska census new household flag instructions that can clarify them for me? Some lists are not separated into families but usually the first name of a group that I assume is a family is designated as the husband. Do I say yes with a new household flag? If he is not listed as the Head in relationship to the head of the family, it doesn't make sense to list him as the husband to the head. I realize a reviewer can change a yes to no easily, but I would like to index this correctly. Thanks

With the exception of daughter, the first letters do not lead you to those identifiers.
H leads you to Half Aunt. "He" must be typed to get "Head".
W leads you to Ward Record. "Wif" must be typed to get "Wife". "Wi" leads to "Widow"
S leads you to Second Cousin. "So" must be typed to get "Son"
GS also leads to Second Cousin. "Grands" must be typed to reach "Grandson".
You also type what you see. If it says that Winifred's relationship to the Head is "mother", then you index "Mother".

Do not assume that a new group's first member is a husband. It's not our job to speculate or assume anything with any project. I have indexed Alaska batches where the Widow was the head of household using the Field Help.
From the Field Help:
Select Yes or No from the drop-down list to indicate whether the individual was the head of household. Select Yes for the head of household, and select No for all other household members.
If the form did not indicate relationships or identify the head of household, select Yes or No from the drop-down list to indicate whether the individual was the first in the household. Select Yes if the individual was the first person of a new household, and select No for all other household members.

Some batches don't indicate when a new household begins. Some lists have no break between names or indicate it is a different household. Would you select yes for a person on a list that starts a different surname as head of household? I should probably send a batch number.

@MaryAnneReynoldsSmith From the PI and the Field Helps, I would index this as follows:
Jack Nicholai - mark Yes for new household and H for relationship to head of household -- the drop-down list works like this: H is head of household; W is wife; S is Son; D is Daughter; GS is grandson and so forth using the first letter of each identifier. Marital Status should be <blank> for each name unless its written on the form. Color or Race is <blank> in every case. Use Father for Jack.
Winifred Nicholai - mark No for household and Mother for relationship and <blank> for relationship to head - this leaves the entire page open to interpretation by the researcher.
All the sons and daughters are marked appropriately for relationship, with <blank> for everything else. Enter all the ages for each.
For this image, I would mark Yes for new household for each New Surname and No for those names following. Just as a note- Father and Mother refer to parentage, not relationship so we cannot assume they are married to each other, even though logic suggests they could be. The words Widow and Husband are not identifiers except with marriages and death lists. The researcher will find the name and the family from what we index and can interpret best.
Hope this makes sense 😎
