Thank you for this timeline, presented in a way I can understand. I wondered why my great-grandparents left Germany at the time that they did, approximately 1849-1850. My great-grandfather came with his parents to America and settled in Washington, D. C. Great-grandfather, August Vogelsberger met great-grandmother, Barbara Wonder, born in Baltimore, Maryland. I believe Barbara's parents came from Germany in the late 1840's. They had three children, and I am descended from the middle son, Lewis. Lewis had one child, Barbara, my mother. My great-grandfather, August, owned a Bootmaker's shop on B Street, Washington D. C. They lived above the shop where three children were born. I am grateful to know what the conditions were that prompted them all to come to America in that time, the middle of the 19th Century. Thank you again for this article!
