Grid in family tree with generation number

Hi,

I am always a bit lost trying to figure to which generation that person belongs to, so having columns with a number on top identifying the generation just like the attached image, would be great.

Not that I ever use the pedigree charts, but if I'm deep in the rabbit hole of a cousin's in-law's parentage, it becomes a not-at-all trivial question: counting from where?

And - to my mind - this goes back to the usual "show me my tree" out of billions of names. The system would grind to halt while sorting out where/who to start from.

Seems to me, if you are seeking generational information pertaining to yourself and the individual, clicking the "View my Relationship on the personal page for the individual gives it instantly. Don't know if that's what the OP was seeking.

Thank you everyone for your answers, it also helps me to think of other ways on how to use the tree. I have been adding my ancestors and sometimes on the tree I am a bit lost on where I am (in time and generation) since I've been looking mostly at direct ancestors, so just the parents, not as much the cousins or other relatives.

About the numbering, I was mostly thinking about the pedigree view, so just the direct ancestors and I think that in this case having the generations as I showed in my image, would be a quick way to know 'when' are we. And it would be related to me, maybe it should only work in this case, to make it easier.

Not that I'm particularly fond of the idea to clutter the landscape tree view with extra labels, but the question about where to count from is trivially easy to answer: every tree view has a "root person" and that would be generation 1. The root person is the one whose PID is in the URL for the tree view. Computationally, this would put no significant burden on the system.

The challenges I see with this suggestion would be:

• where to place the labels, especially as generations are expanded, and the view is zoomed in and out
• how to deal with the overlap in the first and second generations (they aren't laid out on a grid)
• how to label the generations of children, grandchildren, etc.
