US, Michigan—Naturalization Records, 1820–1987 [Part A] [MQCX-CCP]
On this batch, there are two images that state a name change. They should be marked as No extractable data, Right?
However, on the card that the name change applies to should we list the previous name as well as the name that they are now using? Would this be helpful in tying this person to their birthdate, etc.?
Also, should these cards be marked as Other Naturalization Documents? Lots of questions.

Hi Sally Ann,
We wouldn't mark those no extractable data because the project instructions include them in the list to be indexed:
- Index all naturalization records, including declaration of intentions, petitions for naturalization, military petitions, oaths of allegiance, naturalization certificates, final orders, alien registrations, repatriation records, certificates of admission, name change records, certificate of arrival, certificate of loyalty, petition for citizenship, and naturalization cards. In addition, index applications for the above documents or other documents that are similar to these form-types.
They are Other Nat Documents.
You would use an Or between the name changes according the General Indexing Guidelines. These are found at the very bottom of the project instructions. Along with these, the project instructions, and the field helps, you get a lot of information.
Alias Names
If alias names were included on a document, or if an individual's name was listed with various spellings on the document, include all variants, separating each with the word Or. For example, if a name was written as "Georgios (George), George Broski, George Browzowski, or George Brzozowski," index the name fields as follows:
- Given Name: Georgios Or George
- Surname: Broski Or Browzowski Or Brzozowski
