I am indexing live births in Virginia during 1855 in which the clerk who did the recording often used the " to indicate that he was repeating a parent's name and birthplace from the previous row. However he also used the word Do in place of a parent's name or birthplace. I am wondering does anyone know what Do means when used in place of a parent's name or birthplace?

"Do" means "ditto" and you will treat it as ditto marks. Under Ditto Marks in General Indexing Guidelines in the Project Instructions (Guidelines are included in every Project Instructions).

Do not index the word "ditto" or the ditto mark itself. Other signs of repetition may include the abbreviation "Do" or a vertical or horizontal line.
