Occasionally I come across a record where the letter I is used either in the Sex column, or in the race column. I am assuming that this means Indian. Should it be classified as American Indian or Native American, or just ignored?

Is it possible that it could be a sort of check mark? I am doing the same records and many people just check under the appropriate column, and some checks are so fast they just look like lines.

I haven't seen any forms that even include a race field, so I'm kind of surprised!

Quite a few have a race field. Probably the older ones. No, it's definitely a capital I. I ran across one that had a race column and 1/2 W 1/2 Ind was entered.

Yes, I have indexed several with a race field. All of the batches I worked on had a "W" which I entered as white. I would enter the "I" as American Indian. That is a choice on the drop down.

    That is just my opinion.🙂
