Country of Birth in the family tree

Have you tried the "Birth Place" option on your Fan Chart?

Are you going to be upset when everyone born in an American Colony before 1776 has a British flag? That is going to be misleading as they weren't technically born in England, but that is the country which ran the government at the time.
The business of country is very, very messy and complicated world wide as you go back in time. I think implementing this idea will make many people unhappy because they don't know history. I also don't think FamilySearch has the database to get it right either.

Some of my Irish ancestors were born in what is now the Republic of Ireland; some were born in what is now Northern Ireland. When they were born, it was all under British control. The fan chart place of birth option is much more likely to work than flags.

And FamilySearch has deliberately simplified reality in the Standard Place-names. It's put Bavaria in the German Empire from 1805 to 1918, when the German Empire was not created until 1871. Bavaria was an independent kingdom from 1805 to 1871, with its own flag. And let's not ask about the post-WW2 situation where there still appears to be minimal mention of West and East Germany - which have slightly different flags.
Maybe there should be a facility for a user to assign their own icons, which wouldn't depend on FS getting the country names and flags right?
