Many Family history sites offer exporting of data to the GED format. Given the boundlessness of the data, potentially limits would be needed on the width and breadth of the outputted tree, but it could be infinitely useful for people wanting to archive their own data.

It's an intermediate step, but there are third-party genealogy programs that can synchronize with FS's tree. You can use one of them to download your corner of the collaborative tree and then generate a GEDCOM file. (All three of the ones that I know of have free versions that can do the job: Ancestral Quest, Legacy, and RootsMagic. You can find them in the Solutions Gallery, which has a link in the main FS site's footer.)

I use Family Tree Maker to download a GEDCOM from a branch of FamilySearch. It does not have a free version, but it is the most flexible option because you can select an ancestor and choose to download all descendants of that ancestor plus all descendants of siblings of that ancestor, creating a comprehensive family group.
