How do I edit a person in the family tree?

Thank you for posting a question with the Community. You should be able to add a death date for your husband. Click on his name, and on his person, or his details. Scroll down to his Vitals, and where it says Death, and living, click the little pencil. You should be able to add a death date on the next screen.

@PatriciaMay2 Here's a Help Article with the instructions.

That would seem the obvious way and that's what I tried but it won't let me edit the vitals.

I've just tried again and finally it's allowed me to edit. It must have been a glitch.

I can’t figure out how to correct information I see that has been entered incorrectly. Three family members have been entered with part of their names wrong. Kinda frustrating.

@MarySueper1 On the person's page> Details tab you can edit by clicking the pencil icons.

I'm new to this site and have just started to add family. I noticed that some are already in your main tree. When clicking on my grandfathers name I noticed his middle name is incorrect. How do I go about getting it changed to the right name? I know I'm right as my Aunt is still living and she shares the same middle name.

First I would check the sources and make sure the name as shown isn't on one of them. If the name as there has a source, I recommend you do 2 things instead of 1. 1) click the pencil in Vital information to the right of name and edit the spelling as you see fit. 2) Go to the Other Information section and click "ADD ALTERNATE NAME." Then you can let people know his name was also recorded differently in at least one source.
I guess I need to add that you must make sure you are, in fact, dealing with your grandfather and not a different man with almost the same name. Is all OTHER information correct, including his parents, siblings, spouse and children?

In addition to Gail's excellent advice, I suggest you read up a bit more on FamilySearch's Family Tree: you write "in your main tree", as if there were also individual trees here, which is a misconception. Profiles you enter for living people are private to you, yes, but they exist solely to connect you to your deceased relatives, so I would hardly call your private space a "tree".
I suspect, however, that we're a bit too far ahead already, because I think your question stems from only having looked at a tree view, not at any profile pages. There are no pencil (edit) buttons in tree views. To go from a tree to a profile page, click a person's name so that the person card pops up, then click either the name or the "Person" button on the popup.

To edit information about the person, click the pencil next to the information you want to edit. How do I change vital information in Family Tree?
To see what changes have been made, click Show All in Latest Changes. How do I see what changes were made about a person in Family Tree?
To edit relationships, click the pencil to the side of the relationship you want to change. How do I correct parent-child relationships in Family Tree?
You can also add the relationship type, such as biological, step or adopted in the Parent-Child Relationship.
The Help and Learning Center has articles on all these and more. It is an amazing resource. To get there, click the circle with a question mark in the top right corner of any FamilySearch page, and choose Help and Learning.
You will probably get more help if you post questions like this in the Help category Family Tree. https://community.familysearch.org/en/categories/familysearch-help
Hope that helps. Maile 🙂
mod note - names of living individuals were removed from your question for privacy reasons. Please see the Community Code of Conduct for more details.

I misspelled a family name. I followed the instructions to correct that. After accessing that persons vital info, I get stuck and cannot move further. Please advise

@Tyrone734 If you're new to the FamilySearch tree, it can be a little overwhelming.
There are many help articles with step-by-step instructions. If you want someone to walk you through it, please supply the profile ID, and we'll be glad to try. The PID will be near the name of the person. For example, here's the PID of one of my ancestors.
If you click on the PID with your mouse, it will copy automatically, so you can just paste it in your reply.

@Tyrone734 Are you trying to edit the profiles of living persons? Both of those PIDs return a "No Results Found" message. That either means that you are working on living people that no one else can see or you have miscopied the profile IDs.
The profiles of living people can only be viewed by the person who created the profile in order to protect the privacy of the living.

Áine. Both are living persons. Before changing gears and deleting these persons and re-entering them, I will call the "help" contact and seek their assistance.

Tyrone 734 . I finally figured it out. Once I accessed Vitals, I was able to click on the edit tool and correct person name. Thanks for your efforts. This inquiry can be closed.

Tyrone, if they're living and you can see them, that means two things: (1) that you entered them, and (2) that nobody else can see them (except for particular accounts under special circumstances, such as when you contact Support or authorize a helper).
Given (2), it doesn't actually matter what the profiles say, but it should be pretty easy to correct the names. That part works the same way whether the profile is marked living or deceased: click the pencil, make the edits, click Save. Where does the process break for you?

I see an obvious error in one family line, same person entered twice, and I do not see a way to make or even suggest a correction.
And I would love to find clear instructions on how to use Gedcom to put information on this and another site together and match it all up.

The FamilySearch Family Tree is fully open-edit. Anyone can make corrections.
If you are in the Genealogies section, those trees are not editable.
There are extensive instructions and help articles, but uploading a GEDCOM is not the recommended way to make a correction. Some help articles you may find useful https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-change-vital-information-in-family-tree and https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-correct-parent-child-relationships-in-family-tree

Assuming you are seeing two individuals of the same identity on Family Tree, just go ahead and merge them. If the duplicate is not being presented under Research Help, you can go to one of the pages for the individual (usually the one that has the most information / sources already attached) and use the ID of the other (person of same identity) to input in the "Possible Duplicate ID" field, which appears when you use the Merge By ID option.
2 -
If you are in the Details tab for a person, every piece of information has an "edit" button, which is a pencil icon off to the side. Make sure that you explain your reason for making the change.
As for the rules for adding GEDCOM files, my recommendation is: "Don't." In my experience, GEDCOM is better for screwing things up than fixing them. I'm pretty sure they removed the ability to upload GEDCOM files years ago anyway.

@BraydenGraves Unfortunately, the ability to upload a GEDCOM still exists.

How do I enter or correct a middle name?
0 -
Hi Glen - Welcome to FamilySearch Community and asking your question about middle names. You go to the person page (some call it the profile page), details tab, Vitals section, and click the pencil icon to the right of Name. This brings up the edit page. Please note that the first and middle names are all in the same field labeled "First Names." Enter or edit the first and middle names. Put nicknames in the “Other Information” section. Then in the field labeled "Last Names," enter or edit the family name or surname. If a woman changed her surname after marriage, enter or edit her maiden name. If the person has no last name, leave the Last Name field blank. See the link below for additional detail. Hope this helps.

Hi Team,
There are two John Gribble's who were born very close together and both married Mary's. You have intertwined their children and other details. I have corrected all the details for the first John Gribble born in 1792 who married Mary Rogers (also born 1792). This John Gribble died on 09/04/1861 aged 71 years. His parents were James Gribble and Joan Woolcock.
Second John Gribble was born in 1794 and married Mary Rablin (born about 1799) on 01/12/1817. This John Gribble died in 1827 at the age of 29/30. His parents were Richard Gribble and Grace Eddy. Mary (Rablin) Gribble then married again in 1830 to a man named John Hancock. I don't seem to be able to amend the second John Gribble's (born 1794) spouse details to Mary Rablin. Like the first John Gribble (born 1792) who had a child named Mary Ann in 1819, Mary Rablin also had a child named Mary in 1818. The second John (born 1794) parents are Richard Gribble and Grace Eddy.
I reached out to someone in the UK to help me research the two John Gribble's and the two Mary's in more detail. His thorough findings are attached.
I hope the above makes sense to you. It will all be clarified with the attached document. Can you please add Mary Rablin as a spouse to John Gribble born in 1794. Thank you for your assistance. ** I love this website by the way, it is incredibly useful **
Best wishes,
Leanne Mitchell (nee Fullerton)
