I am reviewing M3FK-DNL part D. It is indexed as birth records. It is church membership. I tried changing one, but it then erased the whole entry.

You are correct - it is church membership register. If you change the Record/Entry Type it will remove the entries (that's normal). You may want to copy/paste or screenshot - if that helps you duplicate the entries easier.

Or you can Batch> ReIndex Batch if you don't wish to correct them.
