Pictures are sideways when you try to edit
If you try to "correct" a picture in memories (making the image closer or farther away, or up or down some) the new edit comes out sideways! Every time! In order to edit a picture already in the facial silhouette, you have to download the picture to your computer. Then add the picture again to "Memories". The newly downloaded picture can then be moved and arranged properly. Memories then has two of the same picture.
There is a zoom tool that is better than nothing but it moves in increments. You can't get the image just where you want it. In fact if there is more of the facial image to include but it doesn't fit in the measured increment, then you can't place the rest of the image.

I have had nothing but grief in trying to take one person out of the group photo and add it to their profile page. In the old format I could have done this in seconds. But in the new format all I get in the individual page is a sideways picture and in the middle of the group photo (so I get a pocket, or a chin, or a wall !). How in the world do you add one individual from a group?
By the way I don't mind the new format once I found that I could format my page to look very similar to the old format with one column.

I don't often add photos to my work on FamilySearch, but I just added a large 1881 group photo of my 2nd GGP and ALL their many children, to test, in response to your query. I then isolated each person so the appropriate face shows as the portrait for each of them.
The process took me a few minutes simply because there are so many people in the photo. You can see the results here https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L8P5-Y94 starting from my 2nd GGF.

It looks really good. I guess I forgot to mention in my post that the picture was already existing on FamilySearch. If it is already there it is just a pain to do anything with it. I found that if I downloaded the picture to my computer, then put it back (making a second copy of the picture in Memories), I could then do as you did.
I found that if you want to edit any picture with one person that is already in FamilySearch, it allows you to edit BUT every time it will come out sideways! So again you have to download it to your computer and upload it again. Then you can make the change. Kind of a pain.

That likely has to do with the metadata embedded in the photo. I've seen similar comments on other genealogy websites.
