Should I enter the place name in English or as written in Afrikaans? Specifically, Somerset Oos or Somerset East?

Project instructions: what to remember about this project:

    • Records in this project are primarily in English, Dutch, and Afrikaans. If you download a batch that is in a language you are uncomfortable indexing, simply return it for someone else to index, and download a new project. Do not mark images in different languages as “No, No Extractable Data.”

This implies you should index in the language of the record.
