New Person Pages did not carry over Source Tags
On the new version of the Person pages, all of the Other Information is now sourceless. For every single person, for every single bit of information entered, it is now necessary to Tag Source (by manually tagging each applicable Source, for each item of information, for each individual person). These used to already have their Source from their Attachment. For instance, Residence in 1900 was garnered from a 1900 Census document -- the Census would already appear as a Source for that Residence entry. It seems all of this information was lost in the 'upgrade'. Are there any plans for a sweeping fix, or do we need to continue to reinvesting time we had already spent?
Also, it appears there is a limit to how many Tags we can add to our posts in this forum; it would be useful and helpful to be able to use as many as apply.

You're misremembering or confusing FS with a different site, because the ability to tag conclusions under Other Information with sources is brand-spanking-new in the new layout. No source tagging of anything other than the things in the Vitals box exists anywhere on the old page.

Go back and check. You will find that the Other Information section never had source tagging. This is a brand new feature in the new pages which has been long requested. That 1900 census document was never tagged to a residence because it was impossible to do so. Nothing was lost because it was never there.
If you don't want to add these new tags then don't. It is certainly not required.
Here is the old page with two residences added from the 1916 Canadian and 1920 US censuses:
Not a single tag in sight.

This problem may be more widespread, but I have noticed it when attaching census records. Although the source is attached and residence info is added (so it shows up in "Events"), the page lists "0 sources" supporting that information. But there is a source!
This worked just fine on the old Person Page. Why did you change it?

The process for tagging sources to Events is quite easy in this new version. Open/edit the Event then click TAG SOURCES - you will then be able to tag whichever Sources are attached to the profile for the event (you may need to open a Sources tab to determine which source matches the event if you cannot figure that out from the titles listed - usually a Census for the Residence event I think).

I'm not talking about Tags. I'm talking about the small notation to the right of the title ("Residence" in this case) that say how many sources support that information. It used to be that when you clicked "Add" in the source linker to put that Residence info on the person page, it showed 1 source attached.

@CherylMillerBlack, you're mistaken. The old format showed absolutely nothing about sources in the Other Information section. Nada. Zilch. Zip.
If you need a reminder, there are a bunch of screenshots showing the old layout in this blog post: https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/contacting-other-users.

@CherylMillerBlack The source count in the new person pages> other information should indeed indicate how many are tagged. If it is not when adding a source through sourcelinker that's probably because the source was not tagged to the event during the linking process. You may have to go into Sources or the other information events and tag them in the new version (definitely something to give feedback on). 👍 I expect if there is a tagging issue it will be addressed in the future (hopefully near).
But this type of feedback really should be given in the new person pages group Please join and give your source tagging count increment bug report. @WilmethAnnCarol2

This is also about Events not including the sources for the residences. This should be automatic. If the system can list the year and residence from the census or wherever, then it should automatically link the tag. We shouldn't have to spend pointless time doing it, but if we don't, it looks like there's no back-up for our data. It's time-consuming to have to tag all those sources when it could just be automatic.
If they're not going to automatically link the source when they create that "residence" heading, then go back to the previous way where sources weren't listed. At least that way it doesn't look like there aren't any sources.
1 -
@WilmethAnnCarol2, are you seriously suggesting that since neither the Source Linker nor Family Tree are time travelers, you'd prefer to be unable to tag Other Information to sources?

It seems clear that she was talking editing going forward now that the feature is in place, and she's right. Now that these can be tagged, adding them should tag them -- that should have been part of the initial feature requirement.

"Now that these [Residences / Censuses] can be tagged, adding them should tag them"
Although there is a counter argument to that, which is that censuses can show people at places that are not their residence. (Hospitals, jails, hotels, workhouses, etc. Some of which might be considered to be a residence... It depends)
The question is how do you balance the automatic creation of incorrect data (non-resident residences) against the extra effort to think first and then tag the correct ones.

@Adrian Bruce1 By that logic, why have the option to create a Residence field from a census report at all then on the outside chance it might be debatably inaccurate?
Automatically tagging the field with the source doesn't make anything more or less correct. It just connects the information with where it came from. If anything it would make improve those specific situations by leading people to the actual source. The Residency field generally wouldn't indicate a school or jail, but the full census would.

Please sort this out! Who has the time to tag every source on every person on your tree? It did appear on the "old" person page and needs to carry over to the "new" person page.

@Barbara Anne Nelson Bowen, like CherylMillerBlack, you are mistaken. There is nothing to carry over. The old layout's Other Information section never made any reference whatsoever to sources. There was no sources count, and there was no linkage of any kind between that box and the Sources tab.
Here's a direct link to one of the screenshots of the old Other Information section, from that blog entry: https://cms-b-assets.familysearch.org/dims4/default/5b1a970/2147483647/strip/true/crop/1200x541+0+0/resize/2400x1083!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fd3%2F85%2Fe9e79ff1656f55fd501cda41603a%2Fdetail-view-latest-changes.jpg
Given the frequency of this false impression/memory, I wonder if people are conflating FS with another genealogy site.

Now that we've been forced to use the newer Person Details page I'll point out that the Events section improperly says '0 Sources' when there are 'Sources (4)' attached.

Hi Larry - Welcome to FamilySearch Community and posting your question about sources on events. This is a feature of the new person page that wasn't previously available. However, in order for sources to show up on events, you have to tag the source to the specific event. None of the sources have been tagged to an event. If you will notice up in the vital section, sources have been tagged to name, sex, and birth. Tagging in this section is usually accomplished automatically if you use the source linker. To tag a source, go to the sources tab, click on a specific source and then click on add tag. You will see what it is already tagged to and can add additional tags. Tags for events are at the bottom. Here is a link for more detailed instructions. Hope this helps.
2 -
You may want to add these tags from the details tab of the person page. See the lower part of the instructions.
2 -
This tagging should be in the Source linking page not a separate step that has to be done later. Plus, the Events come clearly from a source when there is a source count! The '0 sources' is a bug since they are coming from Sources.

@LarryRubin, no, the "Sources (0)" label is definitely not a bug: none of those entries have been tagged with specific sources. This is probably because the ability to do so was only introduced with the new layout.
Would it make you feel better if the count were re-labeled as "Source Tags (0)"?
1 -
Also, with the new person page, sources don't auto tag.
Eg.: Other Information-->Events-->Residence, one has to go in and manually tag the residence with the source. On the old person page, those tags were automatically joined with the residences
It's such a hassle now to have to go in and manually tag residence with the source.
I do want to say, however, that you guys at FamilySearch are wonderful. The free service that you offer to everyone is so incredibly generous, and I say a prayer of appreciation for you all every day when I log on to FamilySearch. Please continue your great work that you do for everyone. You are all rock stars ...

@Jan GG The option didn't exist in the previous format.
1 -
@Jan GG, you're at bare minimum the fourth person I've seen claiming that the old version tagged things in the Other Information section. This claim is not true: as Áine said, the capability did not exist. I am getting very curious: what behavior is everyone (mis)remembering, or what words are we using at cross-purposes, to cause such a widespread misapprehension?
2 -
@Julia Szent-Györgyi Linking Census records are Residence by default. That's the Tag, or should be the Tag, right?
After the save, then the Events section is updated and says Residence BUT still says '0 Sources':
Looks like Source Linking does not update the Tag? As it is now there are extra steps needed to make this look correct.
Plus, all previously linked work look to have no sources BUT they actually do.

No, Source Linker can't do non-Vitals tags: it far predates that feature.

mod note - three discussions were merged into one

@Julia Szent-Györgyi I'm guessing that the confusion comes from the vitals section that showed numbers of sources in the previous version. I don't think I have a screenshot saved of a full old page to illustrate, but you can just see the previous "Other" section in this side-by-side from late March.
There is no source attached for the "Alternate Name" of John Henry, just as there are no sources tagged to his residences yet. I have not gotten around to tagging everyone yet.

So I want to make sure I understand what is being said in this thread.
In the earlier version of FS, I would attach a census in source linker. Afterward, I would return and navigate down to Other Information and click the Edit link for my newly created census residence.
Once inside I'd see a reference back to the source. That reference was added when I attached the census in the linker.
Is the consensus here that I never saw those source references?
1 -
Correct. Source tags only existed in the Vital section. Never in the Other Information section.
If you opened the Edit box for data in the Vital section you would see the sources tagged to that data. That did not happen in the Other Information section.
6 -
The consensus is that it is a fact that tagging did not exist in the Other section until the New Person page.
0 -
@No one in particular asked: "Is the consensus here that I never saw those source references?"
As Áine says, it's not just a consensus, but a fact: you cannot have seen source references on conclusions in the Other Information section, because they were not there. They did not exist in the old format.
I've just spent time I didn't have trying to find a screenshot of editing the old Other Information section, but was unsuccessful. The best I could come up with are a couple of screenshots showing that even with "detail view" on, the old Other box made no mention anywhere of sources.
