Option to Lock but Copying Still OK
I hadn't been back to my FamilySearch tree for a couple of weeks. I was so angry when I discovered that someone had made changes that I know are incorrect.
I'm OK with people copying information from my family tree, thus maintaining the FamilySearch goal of collaboration. However, I feel it's very intrusive and downright rude for anyone to go in and make changes to my work.
Why can't we have the option of locking our trees to prevent editing by others with the understanding that just copying is encouraged? If someone has a suggested change, they can message the owner and the owner can determine whether they want to include the suggestion.

I feel the same way Judyfivson does. I had stuff on my tree that I know is right and now it's gone. why is it that people can just change stuff on my tree, make your own tree. Now I can not find any of the things that I had on there. I'm so mad..........

The FamilySearch Family Tree is a single tree for all. There is no "my" tree. You can message others who are researching the same family. Look in the change log for each profile to see the name of the contributor. That username is a link that allows you to message that person privately from the FS message system. https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/what-is-the-purpose-of-familysearch-and-family-tree

Familysearch tree is collaborative and open edit. Even among family there can be disputes on information. We should work together but asking permission is not required. Best to enter information and give good sources and reason statements that reduces mistakes and changes. Always keep a copy of your tree on your own computer using private software.

When I was a newbie here I would message other contributors before changing a profile they worked on before me. Less than 1% ever responded. Most who did respond told me to go away.
So, emphatically no to this. Being able to unilaterally lock any part of the tree is not a feature I want other contributors to have. I don't even want it for myself; I have edited over 100,000 profiles and I certainly don't have time to referee them all.
