Willard Albert Hodge

Male 21 July 1914 – 23 February 1978 •L6JG-7YC

In the past few days it seems that when I pull up the 1950 Census in FamilySearch on the Sources page that it displays: <Unknown>, "United States 1950 Census"

The name is clearly written on the indexed information shown on the Sources page, but it shows up as <Unknown>.

I can edit the source and put in his name and remove the quotes around "United States 1950 Census" to fix it, but this seems to be a new issue.

Thanks,

David Landrey

I've seen that a few times, too. I've also seen it on other sites which have the 1950 census. It's probably just a short-term glitch since the 1950 census is not quite finished. The indexing is still being completed.

Yep, lately when using the source linker, I too have seen <unknown> for the given name pulled over to the source title on the profile from the 1950 US Census even though it is properly indexed.

Refreshing the page usually fixes it for me.

For Oscar Daum GVZG-C4X, I saw a correct hint with his name and attached it with his name still visible. When I reviewed his list of attached sources, his name had been replaced with <Unknown>. I know that I can edit the title of the attached source, but I would like to know what causes this error and if it needs to be corrected in the system. After it happened in Chrome, I detached it and tried again with Firefox. Same result. The screen shots are from Firefox.

@auntsue.genealogyfoundry Very interesting, I have no idea why you are seeing what you see in the attached sources (Tree not being my specialty). But I did find Oscar Daum's 1950 census entry and it does show as being attached to Family Tree. But when I click to review attachments in the source linker, it only shows as having been attached to his daughter Elsie.

You might want to detach the one you see in his sources with "Unknown" for the name. Then, from https://www.familysearch.org/search/ark:/61903/1:1:6F9Y-YFPM, click the Attach to Family Tree button and try again.

thanks, I already detached it. The same problem happened with his wife Margaret. In the FS citation they are not mentioned, only their married daughter Elsie in whose household they lived.

@N Tychonievich I have seen this before but it seems intermittent.

I had an example yesterday. In 1950, several generations of my family were living together, with 3 different surnames in the household. I had attached the census to some of them a few weeks ago but realized yesterday not everyone had been attached.

My uncle and my great-uncle were in the household, with their shared surname misspelled. I attached the record to them - all was well. I then proceeded to submit a correction to the surname. The census now shows as attached to my uncle, in the source list, as "unknown" but correct in the source linker.

    Same for my great-uncle https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LD99-7TN

I’ve tried several times both with my own account and also as a “helper” to Edit the source title for this 1950 US Census entry from <unknown> to Robert J Morgan. No success so far. I’ve tried both the old and new pages. Can anyone else see if they can edit it? LKSK-BZ1

@Chas Howell I just took a look, and the 1950 shows "Robert J Morgan" in the sources list. Perhaps someone else visited before I did or perhaps it was slow to show up:

@Chas Howell I do not see a way to edit the <Unknown> here since his name show up on the record. I could edit the title of the source but that does not change the unknown title when you open the tab.

Right, everything looks okay now. I guess it was just taking some time to show up. I just edited his wife Marian for the same issue, I'll see how long that edit takes to show up.
