If you mean, how do you go back to a profile using its ID, there are several ways: using the box at the top of Recents, using Find - By ID, or by going to any profile and editing the URL.
As for how to save a profile/ID for later reference, you can use the Following feature.

Also, if you have made any additions to that profile, it will be listed in your Contributions.

If we noted the reference number of a family tree on this site, how do we use that reference to return to the tree. Is there a specific search box to search for a previously visited tree by means of that tree's reference number? Or is this purely an internal ID number?

I was perusing that tree and had to shut down and leave. I noted the ref number for future reference but can't see how to use it to 'get back in'.

I am trying to recover the tree K8FF-SJB, but I don't see where to enter that search criteria. It could simply be that the reference is not intended to be used in the way I expected to.

Tony,
your best place for that is to go to "My Contributions".

You can search by PID in Find by ID: https://www.familysearch.org/search/tree/id?from=tree

@TonyNewman6, elaborating a bit on my previous response, if you noted down the profile's ID (PID) somewhere, then you can easily go back to it in one of three ways.
One: go to any Family Tree page, click Recents in the secondary menu, paste or type the PID into the box at the top, and click Go.
Two: using the top menu, select either Family Tree - Find or Search - Family Tree (which both go to the same thing), select the By ID tab, type or paste in the PID, click Search, and click anywhere in the background of the result.
Three: go to any profile page (for example by clicking one of your "Recent People" on the home page), then edit the URL in your browser's address bar, replacing the ID that's there with the desired one.

Where were you trying to enter it?
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K8FF-SJB
That's the individual profile page; if you prefer a chart (landscape or portrait pedigree, fan, descendancy), click "View Tree" in the top strip.

If you are looking for someone and have their ID, you can also use Find by ID in Family Tree> Find

Thank you everyone - I've got it. Let's hope I am up to remembering it. Terrific response.
