simply a way of uniquely referring to a specific Family Tree person record. (PID)

If you tell me something about a record for John Smith you are looking at

there will be literally millions of John Smiths in the system

I will have no clue which one you are referring to and would take my entire life to go through them all. but for every ID (XXXX-XXX) number - there will only be ONE record

and I can go directly to it - in a few clicks of the mouse - by searching on ID

    instead of name.
