Are messages between two members private?

I just learned that any photos that we share are NOT by default.

    This is upsetting.

There could be living people in them, or photos I'm not ready to share to the World Wide Web, just the person I was messaging. Maybe there is copywrite. Someone sent me their family tree chart with living people on it, this is not meant to be public at all. Why is the content of a private message public?????

Can you change the default setting to private so only the two in conversation can see it, then when I choose, I can switch to public.

    Also, warn me.
