indexing, why not children?

I have been doing immigration records in Western PA.... It seems that genealogy is all about identifying and families being joined together. With that being said, why do we not index the children. I think the children and their children is what genealogy is all about.!! The information is there and we do not use it..

On these immigration and naturalization forms,,, the spouses birth country is usually available,,, but our form does not list it... more interested in a prefix !!!

Why do our forms continually ask for prefixes and suffixes.. Those terms are extremely rare to be found on what we are indexing. Just more t blank out !! Don Robinson

    Don,

First, Immigration records are specific to a person when looking for someone not a family. Listing the spouse is helpful in identifying the correct person. Listing the children is not necessary.

You may find prefixes/suffixes rare and unnecessary but for the families who are looking for their families with Dr's, Rev's, II's, III's etc it is extremely helpful.

Indexing helps researchers and genealogists locate names for which they might be looking, because of indexing they will often be able see the original document and find corroborating information about children and other members of particular families.
