1860 census, two different filmings

The church has 2 different filmings of the 1860 census. The second filming is easier to read and is the one that has been index, leaving many recorded people off of the records.

If the church would index the first filming (the original) all those people would be added back. (Throwing out the 2nd film's indexing ... sounds like a great idea because it is greatly flawed.)

I know this for a fact, because I have found several family members on the original difficult to read film but they can not be found anywhere in the second film. That means they can not be indexed for viewing. Many, many years ago I brought it to the Salt Lake Library's attention, but the recorded people are still missing. How do we get this fixed???

The department is doing so much good otherwise.

Sincerely, Thank You, Janice

    What location, please, @Janice (O'Bryan) Byington ?

In the USA, several cities were enumerated twice in 1870, after evidence that the original enumeration was flawed. Manhattan, Philadelphia, and Indianapolis were all enumerated twice in 1870.

    Hi Aine,

Sorry I made a finger error, it was the 1860 census (I couldn't correct it in the original question). John Harper (LHV8-ZL5) is listed with two families in 1860 census. Both of these families are rightfully his but the 2nd filming doesn't show both families.

    1) John Harper and his 1st wife, Marietta Harper (divorce still not found) shows in the 1860 census living in Newburgh Township, Cuyahoga, Ohio. This shows in the 1st filming & 2nd filming and is attached to them both in Sources.

    2) The one with John Harper and his 2nd wife, Mary Harper (who he married in 1858), shows in the 1st filming of the census living in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. Because this part of the census was not indexed because it doesn't exist in the 2nd filming, I am unable to attach it to the family. Ancestry and FamilySearch doesn't have the 1st filming online. You have to request it from the SLC Family History Library, Microfilm #0014799, page 5.

    Keep Smiling, Janice

I edited the year in your original post @Janice (O'Bryan) Byington to match your second post.
