Is it possible to download a family tree in a pdf format so that it could more easily be printed?

There are some 3rd-party Tree management solutions that you can sync profiles to and then use those programs' print options - there are also some Tree printing/Chart options available - in the Solution Gallery.

Depending on what you are looking for the FamilySearch Family Tree:

• Fan Chart tree view here prints a very nice 7 generation tree - which does download in PDF format.
• Portrait view also allows a nice printing of a 5 generation view and downloads in PDF format.
• Landscape view downloads and prints as a 4 generation text PDF.
