Why can't I find Geneva, Switzerland in the Catalog? This is the standardized place name in FamilyTree, yet when I search in the catalog with that spelling of Geneva, it says "No matching places."

I think you found it. https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&placeId=148&query=%2Bplace%3ASwitzerland

    It says:

Place names are taken from these gazetteers: Schweizerisches Ortslexikon 1969. Book number 949.4 E8s, and Geographisches Lexikon der Schweiz, 1910. Film numbers 599323-599326, Book number 949.4 E5g, Fiche number 6053505.

So it appears thus - Genève - in Catalog (not sure if you wanted Canton or City):

    https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&placeId=160535&query=%2Bplace%3A%22Switzerland%2C%20Gen%C3%A8ve%2C%20Gen%C3%A8ve%22

The catalog was in existence before the Place Names Authority/standardization - perhaps the name will change to the standard when the new Catalog is released?
