Let me be specific: I want to search for all the "28 N Spring" address occurrences in 19th century city directories for Springfield, Clark, Ohio. Is it possible to search city directories by address?

    Dear @DavidLubbers1 ,

Below you can find the link to the places'database of FS and the instructions to use it.

Unfortunately no single address is in it.

If you try to look for 28 N SPRING an empty result is given back.

I hope this can help you!

The address field is not indexed for the directories on FamilySearch. There are other sites with directories, and the address MAY be indexed to be searchable. Realize, however, that directories are often OCR-scanned so the address information, especially for older directories, may be illegible and, therefore, not captured accurately.

I am not connected with Family Search.

Perhaps you could email the FamilySearch Digital Library and request that these volumes described on the catalog link https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/41020 also be uploaded to the Family Search Digital Library where they would be potentially searchable as you require.

However as pointed out by Áine Ní Donnghaile the ability to search depends how good the OCR derived text is, which could be illegible.

The Digital Library email address from the link https://www.familysearch.org/en/family-history-library/digital-library is DigitalLibrary@familysearch.org
