Ambiguous Date on Johannesburg Cemetery Record
Batch M3YC-1NV
1st question: there is a date listed on the top right of these records. Is that what I would put in the date of burial field? I don’t see any other field to put that date in, and it seems like it doesn’t go in the death date field.
2nd question: the date listed is “02-05-03.” I have no idea which one is the month, day, or year. Online I read that Johannesburg standard date short format is year-month-day. So this could be 2002-May-03? Or it could be Feb-02-2003. I checked nearby records in the available images and they all have the same date, so I would need to see a different batch to look for a pattern of how the date is listed.

I would put this as this as the burial date.
For over a century, South Africa was under British rule and subsequently used the British dating format of day/month/year, so 02-05-03 translates into May 2, 2003. SA's long-date format is still day/month/year.

Hello,
According to the formula which seems to have been followed in all of the examples quoted in the Project Instructons, i.e. day/month/year the date would be 2nd May 2003. It really isn't clear what that date refers to - probably the record date, for which there is no suitable field to enter it into. Maybe somene else has a better idea?
The name of the cemetery is "Avalon", not Johannesburg.
I hope this helps.
Hilary.

Any time you see "Johannesburg City Parks" or similar, this means the custodian that takes care of the cemeteries in Johannesburg. There is a Johannesburg Cemetery, but it has been closed for well over a century.
Here's a list of the most well-known cemeteries in Johannesburg.

Thank you @erutherford and @DHilary2! Both of your answers were very helpful. It was also helpful to realize that the cemetery is called Avalon. I will put May 2, 2003 as the burial date. Thanks!
