2 different locations rolling in to one
I recently learned how to add locations currently not found in the Familysearch standardized location list. I now see those locations being accepted to familysearch. Great! However, as I am working on revising some of the Jamaican death records to add parish and district, I have noticed several problems in the application of those locations to the indexing.
- Birth records were indexed under their Civil Registry districts. So I followed the same pattern for the death records. However if the place/district is not standardized, it may not come up for a particular name and location search.
- If the location is recognized, but the place is a civil registration district, the district does not appear in search results. If researching a common name, it's hard to separate out so many results with no districts.
- Multiple locations appear to be rolling into one location in the search results. For example, there is a town called Hanover in Manchester parish of Jamaica. There is also a parish called Hanover with capitol being Lucea. In search results, the come up as the same place. I a worried that if I add any more places to these areas, it will only make this problem bigger.
- Jamaica. In Saint James parish - There is a town/hamlet named Orange closer to Montego bay and there is a hamlet called Orange Hill in the south western part of this parish. The Familysearch places side shows them as separate but the Standardized locations for indexing shows them as the same place.
Please help me fix this so that the Jamaican records where I am adding more specific locations don't have to be done in the future.
Help me be a better location adder and indexer.
Thanks, Angela Gibson

You want improvements to the Places gazetteer. The gazetteer is here: https://www.familysearch.org/research/places
Upper left corner of the page has a link with the name + SUGGEST A NEW PLACE.
The gazetteer is maintained by a specialist team; they will research your request and make changes. You'll get a response, usually in a few weeks, by email. You can help the process by giving explanations like this and also any links to websites with relevant information. I have used Google Maps to show the correct location of old cemeteries, etc. If you mention the place names are part of a current indexing project you may also get higher priority.
Thank you for looking out for gazetteer issues. This is foundational work that helps so many other projects.

Some of the hamlets are so remote, the do not readily come up on Google maps and very difficult to pull up on Mapcarta. If there is a high level of a zoomed in on the map, the adjoining hamlet finally appear. Some districts are named for places that no longer exist and very hard to find on modern maps.
