Standardization of Russian Empire Village Names
Dear Family Search--
My ancestors left Germany in the early 1800s for the Russian Empire. They lived and farmed in newly created villages near the Black Sea.
It is difficult now to accurately have a Family Search standardized location for their birth and death information to use with data in my family tree.
These villages created by the German settlers were in the Russian Empire—not in Russia (which came after 1922), not in the USSR, not in the Soviet Union and not in Ukraine.
To add to the confusion, many immigrants from the Russian Empire to the United States simply listed Russia as their country for US census data, birth certificates and death certificates.
Some of my family villages include: Katharinental, Speier, Karlsruhe, Rastadt, Felsenburg and Sulz.
A reference point for many of these villages in the southern Russian Empire can be found with the work done by Sandy Schilling Payne:

Please enhance, advance your standardized locations for these and other villages in the Russian Empire.
Sincerely,
sunboehm@aol.com

I agree. The Germans from Russia Settlement site gives the founding year and GPS coordinates for the town.
this is the link to the Beresan region colonies - click on the down carat to expand the list and choose the individual colony (village). www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1FFv3m_dojVP2QrzhxOsJECoh2nA&ll=47.23260000000003%2C31.502400000000023&z=8
Example: Katharinental, Odessa, Kherson, Russian Empire from1817-1922. 1817 is the year of founding. 1922 is the formation of the Soviet Union. Current place name: Katerynivka, Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine
