What does "&c" mean when used after a name in the New York Mortgages index projects?

US, New York, New York—Indexes to Mortgagees, 1630–1975 [Part A][M3BC-DDL]

Several of the entries on this project have a name and then &c directly following it in either the mortgagor or mortgagee columns. Does it mean "and company," and does it indicate that this is the name of a corporation or organization, and not the name of an individual? When an entry says this, should it be indexed as a given name and surname, or as a corporation/organization name?

For these projects, it means nothing. Disregard it and index the entry as-is.
