    The "Community" is not really the best place to search for a specific surname or speciifc person

    The Family Tree and other locations in Familyearch are where you can find databases of people records.

    also see this listing of the various locations in FamilySearch

    see:

    You should also consider the possibility tthat Silams may not have been the original spelling of the surname.

    Thank you Dennis J Yancey for the web site information. Also, I have wondered whether the surname could have been something other than SIlams: this is a Jewish family; my Uncle was shipwrecked near dates of WW1 and possibly there could have been oppression to Jewish families then. I can see there is much research I need to do. Thank you very much for the initial and the additional web sites you have provided.

    Philip Silams B 1890, RIga, Latvia, Russia. Shipwrecked 1922 James Bay, Canada. Naturalized in Canada. D 1983, British Columbia, Canada. Looking for any information re parents or siblings, living in Riga, presumably 1884-1893? This is my Uncle. He spoke of his family only twice in the 40+ years I knew him.

    @myrnalynnolson1941

    I just found the Philip Silams who has been added to Family Tree with the ID reference K2J9-SSJ, then saw it was you that appears to have created this record in 2012, or earlier. Philip has parents, siblings and sources attached, so I am wondering what more it is that you might be looking for?

    Is it just contacts (perhaps other relatives of yours) who might, by chance, come across your query here and, hopefully, get in touch with you with further information about him?

    Thank you for answering: the reason I had posted this in Community is because the information I have entered in FS is the rare bit of detail verbally explained to me by Uncle Philip. I have no sources to confirm his family information and can only presume that his siblings were also born in RIga. I am looking for sources. I see there is another answer with web sites to search: I will search there. Thank you for your kind attention.

    Thank you for this information on where to go next. I will follow through on the web sites you have suggested. You may be interested to know that a training session on FS/Community was recently provided by the Nanaimo FHC in BC, Canada. We were given homework to use the site, join a group of our particular interest, post a question and respond to any answers. Hence, my use of FS/Community. I can see that it is a very valuable tool. Thank you for your help.
