As I was researching my family tree, I came across my parents having the same first cousin. Does this happen a lot? Or am I closer to the royal family then I thought?

It happens a lot, especially in small communities: villages, religious minorities, occupations involving groups. Military families, mariner families, etc. Royalty is an hereditary occupation involving groups. Formerly, being closely related to all your neighbors was the norm, not the exception it is now.
