Find relationship between two IDs
Provide a way to take two IDs and determine if there is a relationship between those two IDs? The Find My Relationship capability is outstanding for finding my own relationships. My guess is that the logic used in that capability could be easily adapted to finding the relationship between any two IDs. When showing the usefulness and power of FamilySearch to someone else for the first time, it would be amazing and eye-opening to be able to take any two people in the database and show their relationship.

Relative Finder (https://www.relativefinder.org/#/main) is a third-party site/app that can tell you the relationship(s) between any two profiles on FS's Tree. The programming and processing involved is ...non-trivial.

Thank you so much for this great compliment to familysearch.

Background:
Lately, to make my family history more meaningful and valuable, as well as to make it easier to find relations without searching my tree, I've been saving files for relatives with plaintext representations of how we're related (the path to our common ancestor for each of us). It often happens that I want to see this relation between two other individuals in my tree (neither of which are myself). Also, currently, while you can view the relation path to you and a common ancestor, you cannot copy and paste that path (you have to type it out manually).
Therefore, I suggest the following idea:
Add a feature where you can enter two ID numbers, and compare how those two individuals are related. If they are related, show a little copy button to press to copy the path, so you can paste it elsewhere. I suggest making the plaintext path that is copied look something like this (comparing how Rebecka James and Sarah Michaels are related, with John Appleton as their common ancestor):
John Appleton and Susy Smith
Jane Appleton and Ron James
Samuel James and Geneva Pool
Rebecka James
John Appleton and Mary Agricola
Joan Appleton and Charles Justine
Anna Justine and Robert Michaels
Sarah Michaels
Alternatively, I'd be decently happy if you just added a copy button to the current view relationship view, but the above would be preferable and more useful in research.

"Add a feature where you can enter two ID numbers, and compare how those two individuals are related."
There's a third-party site that can do that: Relative Finder.

I would like to find how two people are related in my family, but not to me. For instance I would like to find the relationship between a 2nd generation member and one in the 6th generation. I can only find how they are related to me, but not to someone else.
Thank you. Jeanine (Gross) Lawrence

As long as the two people are deceased you can attempt finding a relationship between the two - on this specific page at BYU FHTL: Relative Finder
I think the relationship between the two people needs to be within ~15 generations of each other or there will not be a relationship returned.

Oh this links is great!!!!!
Thank you Dave for asking what I was looking for.
And thank you Julia for sharing relative Finder link,

A major roadblock I see is not being able to search the relationship between 2 people that may or may not be related to me. You can already view "my relationship" with somebody but why can't I enter information for 2 other individuals that share same last name or are believed to be related otherwise and see how they are related to each other.
A lot of the hints and clues used to find the right person to tie in to a tree comes from association with or relation to others with more known documentation.
I think this feature would be immensely helpful in finding and connecting people.
Think of it like google maps directions feature where you are asked to enter the destination and the starting location and it links the 2 together.
You could just build a simple data entry field asking for the info already requested in the "Find" feature on the site but have 2 of these and a button saying see their connection.

There is a third-party site/app for that: Relative Finder.
The processor load involved is non-trivial. FamilySearch's tree is Very Large.

A simple data entry field needs a lot of background processing with over 8 billion profiles, and growing, in THE TREE.

I was thinking there used to be a way to do it, as I recall using that feature ages ago, but I cannot find it. I do research on my adopted childrens' families and it would be nice to see how they are related to people who message me about doing work on those lines.
Thank you for your help!

There's no way to see relationships between two deceased people directly on FamilySearch.org at this point, but RelativeFinder.org uses Family Tree data and does have that feature. Just sign in to RelativeFinder.org using your FamilySearch credentials, and use the Connect menu to find the option "Two Deceased People".

Thanks Alan. I really appreciate the quick reply. I will try that on relative finder. I just had another person contact me to see how we were related since we worked on the same line, but when it's on my adopted kids' lines, I can't answer that question since I don't have them attached to their birth families for safety reasons, so there's no way to see relationships! It's fun to connect with others and share information.

So if I click on one person's ID (say my dad) and select another person's (say President George Washington) it would show me the connection and family tree line. I can select "view relationship" but this is usually just for me or my wife. I want to see ONLY for me or my side and not her side.

The third-party site Relative Finder (https://www.relativefinder.org/#/main) basically does exactly this. (It uses FamilySearch's Family Tree, but it doesn't "see" your private space [the living people you've entered], so it doesn't show me any relationships involving my in-laws.)

Hi. It would be great to have a facility in which the user can enter two ID numbers, and have the software indicate how (if at all) the two individuals are known to be related.

Relative Finder works with FamilySearch data to do what you are requesting. Please visit this URL: https://relativefinder.org/#/connect

Is there a way to use the "View Relationship" feature to see if two ancestors, (not yourself) are related and where? For instance, I could put in the ID of someone in field one, and the ID of someone else in field two, and just like the "view relationship" search, it would tell us if the two people are related somewhere in the past.

This feature is available in a partner program - BYU Relative Finder - https://relativefinder.org/#/connect

Just keep in mind that RelativeFinder is even stricter than FS's "View Relationship" -- it only considers it a relationship if there's a common ancestor. (FS's algorithm very slightly broadens the scope by including the spouses of the endpoints.)

Mod note - Several requests for finding the relationship between to IDs have been merged here. BYU's Relative Finder can be used at https://relativefinder.org/#/start
